- The Poet - Mad Erik Hase provides the first explanation for the Cluster stars. Like everyone else, the “Discontinuity” as it becomes labeled, has a profound effect on him. His poetry replaces the old gods with a new pantheon of technogods. He is the first to mention Hackerboy. Mad Erik and his poetry pop up here and there, gaining notice, and providing insight into the spiritual universe others are too blind to see. Joe catches him in the headlights of the cab for a moment on the night of the Discontinuity, but it is not until the second book that he falls into the hands of the thought warriors.
Mad Erik Hase is based on two characters I have met in my hometown. The first is a private school English teacher and poet, named Erik. Since he is the first published poet I have met, I wrote him in. But he looks too normal for what I imagined. Instead, for years I have seen an older man, with flowing white hair, riding his bicycle through the village. He has a striking, bold face lined with character. I met him one day in the supermarket parking lot and told him I used his image for my character. It turns out he is a sculptor with studios in Italy and New York. Very interesting man. So interesting he ends up as Wey-gyet, the native American sculptor.
- Heart Adourian: Heart Nancy Adourian, is a tall, thin, dark-skinned girl with shiny black hair down to her waist. A streak of white flows from the top of her head like a waterfall. She is the lead singer of the Paper Moon Band, part of whose act involves origami art. Although song is her avocation, architecture is her true field of study. She has the design for the Memory Moon, which is the Trojan Horse of the thought warriors. While that is being constructed, she and her band develop a following that almost becomes a religion.
- The Paper Moon Band - Doowane, Billy, Electric Heavy, Rezza
- We-gyet: the first of the thought warriors. His carving of the Trojan Horse and the Greek fighters on the shelf in Yuri’s library, gives the Senator the seed of the strategy for the Resistance. He is commissioned to carve the creation gods, crystalizing thought into form.
We-gyet is a native American boy younger than Joe. His pet raven, Plato, a protosoul, is often seen on his shoulder. His long black hair and facial features come from his mother’s side, but his blue eyes come from his Norse greatgrandfather, as does his belief in the mythology. He becomes a central fixture of the Farm, always chipping away at the totem trees, creating spirit guides for the members of his new tribe.
Mad Erik calls him the Tsimshian shape seer of the Raven clan who summons our power animals to the holy trees.
