This page contains a list of characters from my books. If you follow the links deeper, you will enter into the realm of my notes and my visions of these beings. You may prefer to keep them as you imagined them. However, if you dare, you are welcome to see them as they sprang from my mind.
Cassidy's Resistance Cell
Cassidy is a Wildthing, part of the Resistance to "Hackerboy". She is on the side of the “Angels.” She has enhanced the soul of one of the non-dominant species on Earth, a blue merle border collie, with one blue eye, and one brown eye. (Chapter 1) The duality is more than symbolic. Cassidy can see into both the physical and the spiritual universe.
Joe, Sebastian Travers Joe, (St. Joe), is an average young man swept up in global/galactic/metaphysical events ... like the Butterfly effect acting on a person ... He is trapped by duty and honor, struggling against the whirlpool. He drives a gypsy cab, a Ford Escape.
Katie Ray is a feisty, red-headed, young girl. She is a physics and mathematical prodigy. She opens the door between physical and spiritual reality by developing the science of heaven and the formula for the soul. Her basement lab becomes a crossroads for alien visitors, and her breakthroughs quietly shape the Resistance’s understanding of the Reality Field.
Senator Huang is an old, unimportant looking, man in a brown raincoat and a tweed hat, returning from a depressing day of work in the city. At the train station, instead of his regular driver, he meets Joe. Instead of ending his career in obscurity, the wise diplomat becomes the strategist trying to unify Earth before first contact forces the issue.
Yuri is a wealthy technologist whose friendship with Sen. Huang and deep connections make him an ideal host for the Resistance. His facilities become a safe haven—until alien infiltrators nearly succeed in abducting him.
Boris Yuri's trusted assistant.
Chad One of Yuri's employees becomes Katie’s stoic, quietly competent bodyguard.
Mrs. D is Joe’s anxious but warm-hearted landlady. She shelters him without realizing the scale of the danger he’s involved in, grounding the story in the everyday Earth that’s at stake.
Miss McCabe is an elderly neighbor whose nervousness and vulnerability highlight the human-scale consequences of the cosmic conflict unfolding around Joe and Katie.
Mad Erik Hase the poet provides the first explanation for the Cluster stars. Like everyone else, the “Discontinuity” as it becomes labeled, has a profound effect on him. His poetry replaces the old gods with a new pantheon of technogods. He is the first to mention Hackerboy. Mad Erik and his poetry pop up here and there, gaining notice, and providing insight into the spiritual universe others are too blind to see. Joe catches him in the headlights of the cab for a moment on the night of the Discontinuity.
The Bikers were like Joe's adopted family and had helped him make it through school, but Joe was more of a loner than a family guy. He showed up at “family gatherings” and pitched in when needed. (Nick, Michelle, Mr. Miagi, Bizarro Phil, Mikey, Harry the Hat, Squeegee, Lady Die, Mr. Fixit, Juan, Jesus, Nedjla)
Peter Pottinger is a lunar colonist at New Philly. First to face the interstellar pirates, captured, and taken aboard the Hunter-Gatherer.
Daryl Pottinger, Peter's brother, is a military pilot - [O’Moore, Liu, Mischa Petrov, Lemieux, Natasha Garsov]
Julie, Labrie, Trevor Espinosa, Lucinda Khan, Booker, Martino, ... more Fellow lunar colonists captured alongside Peter. Their ordeal—branding, transport, and preparation for sale—embodies the stakes of humanity’s sudden exposure to interstellar predation.
Fleet & Pirates
Admiral Erk is a Breeze (birdman) of the warrior caste, commanding his vessel with sharp instincts
and a predator’s grace. His authority is unquestioned among the Fleet, and his
tactical sense makes him one of the most formidable non-human allies encountered.
The Little Emperor is a Wildthing inhabiting a balloon-pet body, projecting an air of mischief and
inscrutable wisdom. Though physically unimposing, his influence within the Fleet
is disproportionate, and his motives are rarely obvious.
Baarth is a Walker (insectoid) serving as first mate. Methodical, disciplined, and
quietly intimidating, Baarth keeps the ship running with a precision that borders
on ritual. His loyalty to Admiral Erk is absolute.
Tsstsstss is an apeman pirate whose brute strength and feral cunning make him a dangerous
opponent. He thrives in chaos and violence, embodying the raw brutality of the
pirate clans operating in the Cluster.
Blue Scales is a longnosed lizard serving as first mate aboard a pirate vessel. Calculating and
cold-blooded in every sense, Blue Scales oversees raids and prisoner handling with chilling efficiency.
Scar Snout is another longnosed lizard who replaces Blue Scales as first mate. Scarred from
past battles and even more ruthless than his predecessor, he rises quickly through the pirate hierarchy.
Targon and Flea is a pair of opportunistic pirates who operate on the fringes of the larger slaver
networks. Their partnership is built on convenience, greed, and a knack for
surviving situations that should have killed them long ago.
Wildthings and Wisemen
Big Silver is a Wildthing cohabiting with a horse-shaped host body, towering and imposing yet capable
of surprising gentleness. Big Silver’s presence often signals a shift in mood or
momentum, as his instincts tend to align with pivotal moments.
Oldthinker and Crystalson, the Wisemen, are Treeborn, little green men. Oldthinker: “My expertise is chemistry and biology, genetic engineering and neuroscience. I create models of the brain,” Crystalson: “My field is optics and holography! I create the storage for memories.”
Curly is a Wildthing cohabiting with a centipede-like host. He was unable to gather support and complete his cell.
The wiseman Sharp is a Hardskin with a scorpion-form body. He has buried his thoughts about FTL for a long time, since he didn't want them to fall into the hands of the Emperor!
Sunshine is a Wildthing cohabiting with a small yellow Breeze. Light, quick, and
irrepressibly curious, Sunshine flits through conversations and crises alike, offering flashes of clarity at unexpected moments.
Reed is a Leafian, a form of Seedborn. Has been running from star to star because of the warrant for her capture, so she has had little time to think about the FTL problem.
Other Worlds
Home of the Sandstorn: Mumdee
A Skoleme (ratman) whose fervent religious zeal shapes every aspect of his life.
Mumdee interprets events through a lens of prophecy and divine mandate, making him
both unpredictable and dangerously committed to his cause.
The Nest: Greatwing6 is a Hardskin, a
praying-mantis-form religious leader whose authority rests on ritual precision
and an unbroken lineage of spiritual interpreters. Greatwing6’s decisions carry
immense weight among his people, especially during times of doctrinal upheaval.
Nimblethinker is the chosen successor of Greatwing6, also a Hardskin of praying-mantis-form.
Quick, observant, and intellectually agile, Nimblethinker represents a more adaptive strain of
religious leadership, poised to guide his people into a shifting future.
Unnamed Wildthing inhabiting a two-headed snake host. Its dual perspectives create
a strange, echoing manner of speech, and its insights often arrive in paired
contradictions that nonetheless reveal deeper truths.
Forestworld: Garnto
an Arrpto (bearlike), a type of Treeborn, head of the philosopher clan. Garnto’s
contemplative strength and deep moral reasoning make him a stabilizing force
on his world, where wisdom is valued as highly as physical might.
Urgard
a Plort (hoglike), a type of GroundRunner, known for his warrior’s discipline and
unwavering sense of duty. Urgard embodies the martial traditions of his people,
balancing ferocity with a strict personal code.
The High Castle: Rovnanian is a Wanderer, a humanoid Treeborn,
one of the nomadic “space gypsies” who travel the Cluster along
ancient, shifting routes. Rovnanian carries stories, secrets, and a perspective
unbound by planetary loyalties, making him an invaluable source of insight.
Antagonists
Hackerboy is the Devil. He is an observer who wants to keep the physical universe unspoiled and pristine. He wants to listen to the tree falling in the forest. He is the ultimate environmentalist! Wildthings, demon friends of Hackerboy, maintain the Cluster by sabotaging FTL, killing FTL scientists, and doing evil things.
Lzztess is a Zllpt, a short-nosed lizard. She is a con-artist from Headquarters when we first meet her. Her con is selling dark matter crystals. Sweetie is her Wildthing and translator, cohabiting a FromTheWater, froglike body.
